What is Prushthapichu?
‘Pichu’ means a pad of cotton or cloth soaked in medicated oil, and ‘prushtha’ means the back. In Prushthapichu, a thick, warm, oil-soaked pad is laid along the spine and kept warm by re-soaking it in warm oil.
It is a simple, gentle way of keeping warm medicated oil in contact with the back.
How Prushthapichu is done at Sattva
Every therapy at Sattva begins with a consultation. Our physician reviews your health history, diet and lifestyle and uses traditional methods such as pulse diagnosis (Nadi Pariksha) to understand your constitution, then decides whether Prushthapichu is right for you and which preparation to use. Panchakarma at Sattva is medically supervised.
You lie face down. A cotton pad soaked in warm medicated oil is placed along the spine and replaced with a freshly warmed one as it cools. The back is usually massaged gently afterwards.
Who may benefit from Prushthapichu?
Our clinic describes Prushthapichu as alleviating pain, strengthening the spinal column and aiding recovery from spinal cord injuries. After assessment, it may be considered for people with:
- Back pain and stiffness
- Recovery after spinal problems, only alongside their neurological, orthopaedic and physiotherapy care
Whether Prushthapichu is suitable for you is decided by the physician after your consultation. Please tell us about pregnancy, recent surgery or injury, fever, skin problems, allergies, heart conditions and any medicines you take.
What to expect
Your visit starts with a consultation, after which the therapy is carried out in the therapy room. Afterwards you can rest before going home, and the therapist will give you simple aftercare advice. The length of each session and the number of sittings vary from person to person; your physician will explain them in your treatment plan.
Prushthapichu: frequently asked questions
Do I need a consultation before Prushthapichu?
Yes. An appointment is required for all consultations and treatments. Your first consultation covers your health history, diet and lifestyle, and includes traditional pulse diagnosis (Nadi Pariksha), so that the physician can decide whether Prushthapichu is suitable for you.
How is Prushthapichu different from Kati Vasti?
Kati Vasti holds a pool of oil over the lower back in a dough ring, while Prushthapichu uses an oil-soaked pad and can cover more of the spine.
Can it treat a slipped disc?
We cannot promise that. It may be used as supportive care, but a slipped disc should be assessed and managed with your spine specialist.
