What is Patrapottali Swedanam?
Patrapottali Swedanam, known in Kerala as Elakizhi (‘ela’ means leaf, ‘kizhi’ means bundle), uses cloth bundles filled with fresh medicinal leaves. Classically these are Vata-pacifying plants such as Nirgundi, Eranda (castor) and Arka, fried with grated coconut, lemon and medicated oil.
It is a form of sudation (swedana) that combines warmth, herbs and massage.
How Patrapottali Swedanam is done at Sattva
Every therapy at Sattva begins with a consultation. Our physician reviews your health history, diet and lifestyle and uses traditional methods such as pulse diagnosis (Nadi Pariksha) to understand your constitution, then decides whether Patrapottali Swedanam is right for you and which preparation to use. Panchakarma at Sattva is medically supervised.
The body or the affected area is first anointed with warm oil. The leaf bundles are heated in medicated oil and pressed and massaged rhythmically over the area, and reheated throughout to keep them warm. It can be done locally or on the whole body.
Who may benefit from Patrapottali Swedanam?
Our clinic describes Patrapottali Swedanam as providing relief from pain and stiffness in conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and effusion. After assessment, it may be considered for people with:
- Joint or muscle pain and stiffness
- Swelling around joints, alongside their regular medical care
Whether Patrapottali Swedanam is suitable for you is decided by the physician after your consultation. Please tell us about pregnancy, recent surgery or injury, fever, skin problems, allergies, heart conditions and any medicines you take.
What to expect
Your visit starts with a consultation, after which the therapy is carried out in the therapy room. Afterwards you can rest before going home, and the therapist will give you simple aftercare advice. The length of each session and the number of sittings vary from person to person; your physician will explain them in your treatment plan.
