What is Janudhara?
Janudhara is a dhara (stream) therapy for the knees. After a gentle massage, warm medicated oil is poured in a continuous stream over the knee joints.
It is part of the family of Ayurvedic pouring therapies, which use a steady flow of warm liquid over one area of the body.
How Janudhara is done at Sattva
Every therapy at Sattva begins with a consultation. Our physician reviews your health history, diet and lifestyle and uses traditional methods such as pulse diagnosis (Nadi Pariksha) to understand your constitution, then decides whether Janudhara is right for you and which preparation to use. Panchakarma at Sattva is medically supervised.
You lie on your back. The knees are gently massaged, and then warm medicated oil is poured in a slow, even stream over the joints from a vessel held above them. The oil is collected and re-warmed to keep the temperature comfortable.
Who may benefit from Janudhara?
Our clinic describes Janudhara as a soothing knee therapy to relieve pain, reduce stiffness and relax the surrounding muscles. After assessment, it may be considered for people with:
- Knee pain or stiffness
- Tight muscles around the knee
Whether Janudhara is suitable for you is decided by the physician after your consultation. Please tell us about pregnancy, recent surgery or injury, fever, skin problems, allergies, heart conditions and any medicines you take.
What to expect
Your visit starts with a consultation, after which the therapy is carried out in the therapy room. Afterwards you can rest before going home, and the therapist will give you simple aftercare advice. The length of each session and the number of sittings vary from person to person; your physician will explain them in your treatment plan.
Janudhara: frequently asked questions
Do I need a consultation before Janudhara?
Yes. An appointment is required for all consultations and treatments. Your first consultation covers your health history, diet and lifestyle, and includes traditional pulse diagnosis (Nadi Pariksha), so that the physician can decide whether Janudhara is suitable for you.
How is Janudhara different from Janu Basti?
In Janu Basti the oil is held still over the knee in a dough ring, while in Janudhara it flows continuously over the joint.
Can both knees be treated together?
Usually yes.
