Knee Joint Oil Retention Therapy

Janu Basti in Bhopal

A localized treatment where warm, medicated oil is retained over the knee joints using a dough ring to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and address conditions like osteoarthritis and ligament issues.

What is Janu Basti?

Janu Basti (also spelled Janu Vasti) is a localised Ayurvedic therapy for the knee (janu). A ring of dough is built around the knee joint and filled with warm medicated oil, which is held there for a period of time.

Like Kati Vasti for the lower back, it is an external ‘basti’ treatment and is traditionally used for Vata-related pain and stiffness of the joints.

How Janu Basti is done at Sattva

Every therapy at Sattva begins with a consultation. Our physician reviews your health history, diet and lifestyle and uses traditional methods such as pulse diagnosis (Nadi Pariksha) to understand your constitution, then decides whether Janu Basti is right for you and which preparation to use. Panchakarma at Sattva is medically supervised.

You lie on your back and the dough ring is fixed around the knee. Warm medicated oil is poured in and kept at a comfortable temperature by removing, re-warming and replacing it. Afterwards, the oil is drained and the knee is usually given a gentle massage.

Who may benefit from Janu Basti?

Our clinic describes Janu Basti as relieving pain, reducing inflammation and addressing conditions like osteoarthritis and ligament issues. After assessment, it may be considered for people with:

  • Knee pain or stiffness, including from osteoarthritis, alongside their regular care
  • Knee discomfort after ligament problems, as judged by the physician

Whether Janu Basti is suitable for you is decided by the physician after your consultation. Please tell us about pregnancy, recent surgery or injury, fever, skin problems, allergies, heart conditions and any medicines you take.

A hot, red, very swollen knee, or a knee you cannot put weight on after an injury, should be seen by a doctor first.

What to expect

Your visit starts with a consultation, after which the therapy is carried out in the therapy room. Afterwards you can rest before going home, and the therapist will give you simple aftercare advice. The length of each session and the number of sittings vary from person to person; your physician will explain them in your treatment plan.

Janu Basti: frequently asked questions

Do I need a consultation before Janu Basti?

Yes. An appointment is required for all consultations and treatments. Your first consultation covers your health history, diet and lifestyle, and includes traditional pulse diagnosis (Nadi Pariksha), so that the physician can decide whether Janu Basti is suitable for you.

Can both knees be treated together?

Usually yes.

Can Janu Basti help me avoid knee replacement?

We cannot promise that. Janu Basti can be part of a care plan, but decisions about surgery should be discussed with your orthopaedic doctor.
