Herbal Knee Poultice Therapy

Janu Upanaha in Bhopal

A targeted knee treatment where a paste of Ayurvedic herbs and oil is applied to the knee to provide relief from pain, stiffness, swelling, and muscle spasms.

What is Janu Upanaha?

Upanaha is a classical Ayurvedic poultice. In Janu Upanaha, a warm paste of herbs and oil is applied over the knee (janu), covered and bandaged, and left in place for a time advised by the physician.

Upanaha is a form of sudation (swedana), in which warmth and herbs work together on the joint.

How Janu Upanaha is done at Sattva

Every therapy at Sattva begins with a consultation. Our physician reviews your health history, diet and lifestyle and uses traditional methods such as pulse diagnosis (Nadi Pariksha) to understand your constitution, then decides whether Janu Upanaha is right for you and which preparation to use. Panchakarma at Sattva is medically supervised.

The herbal paste is warmed and spread over the knee, then covered with leaves or cloth and bandaged. After the advised time, the bandage is removed and the area is cleaned.

Who may benefit from Janu Upanaha?

Our clinic describes Janu Upanaha as a targeted knee treatment that provides relief from pain, stiffness, swelling and muscle spasms. After assessment, it may be considered for people with:

  • Knee pain and stiffness
  • Swelling or muscle spasm around the knee, as judged by the physician

Whether Janu Upanaha is suitable for you is decided by the physician after your consultation. Please tell us about pregnancy, recent surgery or injury, fever, skin problems, allergies, heart conditions and any medicines you take.

What to expect

Your visit starts with a consultation, after which the therapy is carried out in the therapy room. Afterwards you can rest before going home, and the therapist will give you simple aftercare advice. The length of each session and the number of sittings vary from person to person; your physician will explain them in your treatment plan.
