What is Kashaya / Niruha Basti?
Niruha (also called Kashaya or Asthapana) Basti is a cleansing enema made with a herbal decoction. Classically, its ingredients are mixed in a set order: honey, rock salt, medicated oil, a herbal paste and the decoction. Our clinic describes it as a blend of honey, herbal decoction and medicated oil, used to manage pain, ease gastric problems and detoxify the body.
In classical Panchakarma, Niruha Basti is usually alternated with Sneha (oil) Basti over a structured course, such as the Yoga, Kala or Karma Basti schedules described in the texts.
How Kashaya / Niruha Basti is done at Sattva
Every therapy at Sattva begins with a consultation. Our physician reviews your health history, diet and lifestyle and uses traditional methods such as pulse diagnosis (Nadi Pariksha) to understand your constitution, then decides whether Kashaya / Niruha Basti is right for you and which preparation to use. Panchakarma at Sattva is medically supervised.
The decoction mixture is freshly prepared and warmed. Classically, it is given on an empty stomach while you lie on your left side, using a sterile, single-use nozzle. It is usually passed within a short time, after which you rest and then take a light meal.
Who may benefit from Kashaya / Niruha Basti?
After assessment, it may be considered for people with:
- Vata-related pain and stiffness
- Digestive complaints such as bloating and gas, as judged by the physician
- A need for cleansing as part of a Panchakarma plan
Whether Kashaya / Niruha Basti is suitable for you is decided by the physician after your consultation. Please tell us about pregnancy, recent surgery or injury, fever, skin problems, allergies, heart conditions and any medicines you take.
What to expect
Your visit starts with a consultation, after which the therapy is carried out in the therapy room. Afterwards you can rest before going home, and the therapist will give you simple aftercare advice. The length of each session and the number of sittings vary from person to person; your physician will explain them in your treatment plan.
Kashaya / Niruha Basti: frequently asked questions
Do I need a consultation before Kashaya / Niruha Basti?
Yes. An appointment is required for all consultations and treatments. Your first consultation covers your health history, diet and lifestyle, and includes traditional pulse diagnosis (Nadi Pariksha), so that the physician can decide whether Kashaya / Niruha Basti is suitable for you.
Why are Niruha and Sneha Basti alternated?
Niruha Basti cleanses while Sneha Basti nourishes. Alternating them is the classical way of balancing the two effects.
Is it safe?
It is given only after assessment and by trained staff. Tell the physician about bowel conditions, recent surgery, pregnancy and all your medicines.
