What is Sneh/Matra Basti?
Basti, a medicated enema, is regarded in Ayurveda as one of the most important Panchakarma procedures, especially for Vata dosha. In Sneha (also called Anuvasana) Basti, medicated oil is used. Matra Basti is a small, measured dose of oil that classical texts describe as gentle and suitable for many people.
Our clinic describes it as a nourishing and detoxifying enema therapy, in which medicated oil is given to flush out toxins and rejuvenate the body from within.
How Sneh/Matra Basti is done at Sattva
Every therapy at Sattva begins with a consultation. Our physician reviews your health history, diet and lifestyle and uses traditional methods such as pulse diagnosis (Nadi Pariksha) to understand your constitution, then decides whether Sneh/Matra Basti is right for you and which preparation to use. Panchakarma at Sattva is medically supervised.
Classically, Sneha Basti is given after a light meal. The lower back and abdomen are usually massaged with oil and warmed first. You lie on your left side and the warm medicated oil is gently introduced with a sterile, single-use nozzle. You then rest, and the physician advises how long to retain the oil.
Who may benefit from Sneh/Matra Basti?
After assessment, it may be considered for people with:
- Vata-related complaints such as dryness and hard stools
- Joint and back pain, as part of a wider plan
- A need for nourishing therapy, as judged by the physician
Whether Sneh/Matra Basti is suitable for you is decided by the physician after your consultation. Please tell us about pregnancy, recent surgery or injury, fever, skin problems, allergies, heart conditions and any medicines you take.
What to expect
Your visit starts with a consultation, after which the therapy is carried out in the therapy room. Afterwards you can rest before going home, and the therapist will give you simple aftercare advice. The length of each session and the number of sittings vary from person to person; your physician will explain them in your treatment plan.
