What is Virechanam?
Virechanam (Virechana) is one of the five main procedures of Panchakarma. It is a controlled, medically supervised therapeutic purgation that uses herbal medicines to cleanse the body through the bowels.
Classically, it is the preferred Panchakarma procedure when Pitta dosha predominates. Our clinic describes it as cleansing the body of excess Pitta-related toxins from the liver, gallbladder and intestines through a controlled purgation process.
How Virechanam is done at Sattva
Every therapy at Sattva begins with a consultation. Our physician reviews your health history, diet and lifestyle and uses traditional methods such as pulse diagnosis (Nadi Pariksha) to understand your constitution, then decides whether Virechanam is right for you and which preparation to use. Panchakarma at Sattva is medically supervised.
Classical Virechanam has three stages, and each one is supervised by the physician:
- Preparation (purvakarma): internal oleation, usually with medicated ghee taken for a few days, followed by Abhyangam and steam to prepare the body.
- The procedure: on the chosen morning, a herbal purgative is given and you are monitored as it takes effect.
- Aftercare: a gradual return to normal food (samsarjana krama), starting with light, easily digested meals.
Who may benefit from Virechanam?
Virechanam is advised only after a full assessment. It may be considered for:
- People with Pitta-predominant conditions, as judged by the physician
- People for whom the physician recommends a structured detoxification as part of a Panchakarma plan
Whether Virechanam is suitable for you is decided by the physician after your consultation. Please tell us about pregnancy, recent surgery or injury, fever, skin problems, allergies, heart conditions and any medicines you take.
It is not suitable for everyone, for example during pregnancy or for people who are very weak. The physician will decide.
What to expect
Your visit starts with a consultation, after which the therapy is carried out in the therapy room. Afterwards you can rest before going home, and the therapist will give you simple aftercare advice. The length of each session and the number of sittings vary from person to person; your physician will explain them in your treatment plan.
