What is Ksheeradhara?
Ksheeradhara (ksheera means milk, dhara means stream) is a pouring therapy that uses milk boiled with medicinal herbs. The warm medicated milk is poured in a continuous stream over the head, as in Shirodhara, or over the body.
In Ayurveda, milk is considered cooling and calming, so Ksheeradhara is classically chosen for Pitta and Vata imbalances.
How Ksheeradhara is done at Sattva
Every therapy at Sattva begins with a consultation. Our physician reviews your health history, diet and lifestyle and uses traditional methods such as pulse diagnosis (Nadi Pariksha) to understand your constitution, then decides whether Ksheeradhara is right for you and which preparation to use. Panchakarma at Sattva is medically supervised.
You lie on the therapy table and the warm herbal milk is poured in a steady stream from a vessel above you, over the forehead or the body. It is collected and re-warmed to keep the temperature even, and washed off afterwards.
Who may benefit from Ksheeradhara?
Our clinic describes Ksheeradhara as a calming therapy to relieve stress and stabilise the mind. After assessment, it may be considered for people who:
- Feel stressed or find it hard to switch off
- Have difficulty sleeping
- Have complaints that Ayurveda links to excess heat (Pitta), such as a burning sensation
Whether Ksheeradhara is suitable for you is decided by the physician after your consultation. Please tell us about pregnancy, recent surgery or injury, fever, skin problems, allergies, heart conditions and any medicines you take.
What to expect
Your visit starts with a consultation, after which the therapy is carried out in the therapy room. Afterwards you can rest before going home, and the therapist will give you simple aftercare advice. The length of each session and the number of sittings vary from person to person; your physician will explain them in your treatment plan.
Ksheeradhara: frequently asked questions
Do I need a consultation before Ksheeradhara?
Yes. An appointment is required for all consultations and treatments. Your first consultation covers your health history, diet and lifestyle, and includes traditional pulse diagnosis (Nadi Pariksha), so that the physician can decide whether Ksheeradhara is suitable for you.
How is Ksheeradhara different from Shirodhara?
The technique is the same, but Ksheeradhara uses medicated milk instead of oil, which Ayurveda regards as more cooling.
Is the milk prepared fresh?
Medicated milk is traditionally prepared fresh for each session.
