What is Takradhara?
Takradhara uses takra (buttermilk) processed with herbs, classically including Amalaki (Indian gooseberry) and Musta. It is poured in a steady stream over the forehead, as in Shirodhara, or over the body.
Buttermilk-based dhara is traditionally regarded as cooling, and Kerala Ayurveda describes it for an over-active mind and for scalp and skin conditions.
How Takradhara is done at Sattva
Every therapy at Sattva begins with a consultation. Our physician reviews your health history, diet and lifestyle and uses traditional methods such as pulse diagnosis (Nadi Pariksha) to understand your constitution, then decides whether Takradhara is right for you and which preparation to use. Panchakarma at Sattva is medically supervised.
You lie on the therapy table while the medicated buttermilk flows from the dhara vessel across the forehead or body. It is collected and re-used to keep the flow continuous, and washed off afterwards.
Who may benefit from Takradhara?
Our clinic describes Takradhara as a soothing therapy that relaxes the mind and is used for skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema and dandruff. After assessment, it may be considered for people who:
- Feel stressed or have difficulty sleeping
- Have scalp complaints such as dandruff
- Have skin conditions such as psoriasis or eczema, alongside their regular care
Whether Takradhara is suitable for you is decided by the physician after your consultation. Please tell us about pregnancy, recent surgery or injury, fever, skin problems, allergies, heart conditions and any medicines you take.
What to expect
Your visit starts with a consultation, after which the therapy is carried out in the therapy room. Afterwards you can rest before going home, and the therapist will give you simple aftercare advice. The length of each session and the number of sittings vary from person to person; your physician will explain them in your treatment plan.
Takradhara: frequently asked questions
Do I need a consultation before Takradhara?
Yes. An appointment is required for all consultations and treatments. Your first consultation covers your health history, diet and lifestyle, and includes traditional pulse diagnosis (Nadi Pariksha), so that the physician can decide whether Takradhara is suitable for you.
Is Takradhara the same as Shirodhara?
It uses the same technique, but with medicated buttermilk instead of oil.
Will it smell sour?
Buttermilk has a mild sour smell. It is washed off after the therapy.
