What is Netra Tarpanam?
Netra Tarpanam (also Akshi Tarpana) is a classical Ayurvedic eye therapy. A small wall of dough is built around the eyes and filled with lukewarm medicated ghee, classically preparations such as Triphala Ghrita. The eyes rest in the ghee while you gently open and close them.
‘Tarpana’ means nourishing, and the therapy is traditionally used to relax and nourish the eyes.
How Netra Tarpanam is done at Sattva
Every therapy at Sattva begins with a consultation. Our physician reviews your health history, diet and lifestyle and uses traditional methods such as pulse diagnosis (Nadi Pariksha) to understand your constitution, then decides whether Netra Tarpanam is right for you and which preparation to use. Panchakarma at Sattva is medically supervised.
Your face is cleansed and you lie on your back. The dough rings are placed around the eyes and filled with warm medicated ghee until the eyelashes are covered, and you blink slowly as instructed. Afterwards, the ghee is drained and the eyes are cleaned. It is best to avoid bright light and screens for a while afterwards.
Who may benefit from Netra Tarpanam?
Our clinic describes Netra Tarpanam as relaxing and strengthening the eye muscles, and ideal for computer-related eye strain and chronic retinal conditions. After assessment, it may be considered for people with:
- Tired, strained eyes from screen work
- Dry or tired-feeling eyes
- Long-standing eye conditions, only alongside care from an eye specialist
Whether Netra Tarpanam is suitable for you is decided by the physician after your consultation. Please tell us about pregnancy, recent surgery or injury, fever, skin problems, allergies, heart conditions and any medicines you take.
It is not done during an eye infection. Anyone with a retinal condition should continue to see their ophthalmologist.
What to expect
Your visit starts with a consultation, after which the therapy is carried out in the therapy room. Afterwards you can rest before going home, and the therapist will give you simple aftercare advice. The length of each session and the number of sittings vary from person to person; your physician will explain them in your treatment plan.
