Medicated Nasal Oil Administration

Nasyam in Bhopal

An effective therapy for sinus congestion where medicated oil drops are administered into the nostrils after a forehead massage and steam inhalation to clear the nasal passages.

What is Nasyam?

Nasyam (Nasya) is one of the five main procedures of Panchakarma. Medicated oil or other herbal preparations are given through the nostrils. Classical texts call the nose ‘the gateway to the head’, so Nasyam is traditionally used for complaints of the head, neck and sinuses.

How Nasyam is done at Sattva

Every therapy at Sattva begins with a consultation. Our physician reviews your health history, diet and lifestyle and uses traditional methods such as pulse diagnosis (Nadi Pariksha) to understand your constitution, then decides whether Nasyam is right for you and which preparation to use. Panchakarma at Sattva is medically supervised.

As our clinic describes it, the forehead and face are first massaged and steam is given. The medicated oil drops are then put into the nostrils while you lie with your head tilted back.

Afterwards, you are encouraged to spit out any loosened mucus, and a warm-water gargle is often given.

Who may benefit from Nasyam?

Our clinic describes Nasyam as an effective therapy for sinus congestion that clears the nasal passages. After assessment, it may be considered for people with:

  • Sinus congestion and a blocked nose
  • Heaviness of the head
  • Other head and neck complaints, as judged by the physician

Whether Nasyam is suitable for you is decided by the physician after your consultation. Please tell us about pregnancy, recent surgery or injury, fever, skin problems, allergies, heart conditions and any medicines you take.

It is usually avoided during fever, straight after meals and during pregnancy. The physician will decide.

What to expect

Your visit starts with a consultation, after which the therapy is carried out in the therapy room. Afterwards you can rest before going home, and the therapist will give you simple aftercare advice. The length of each session and the number of sittings vary from person to person; your physician will explain them in your treatment plan.

Nasyam: frequently asked questions

Do I need a consultation before Nasyam?

Yes. An appointment is required for all consultations and treatments. Your first consultation covers your health history, diet and lifestyle, and includes traditional pulse diagnosis (Nadi Pariksha), so that the physician can decide whether Nasyam is suitable for you.

Does Nasyam burn?

Some preparations feel pungent for a short time. Tell the therapist if it is uncomfortable.

Can I do Nasyam at home?

Ayurveda describes gentle daily nasal oiling, but medicated Nasyam should be done only as your physician advises.
