What is Vamanam?
Vamanam (Vamana) is the first of the five main procedures of Panchakarma. It is a controlled, medically supervised therapeutic emesis (induced vomiting) that uses herbal medicines to remove excess Kapha dosha.
Our clinic describes it as a cleansing therapy that involves medicated ghee and massage to induce therapeutic vomiting, used for chronic allergies, asthma and other Kapha-related disorders.
How Vamanam is done at Sattva
Every therapy at Sattva begins with a consultation. Our physician reviews your health history, diet and lifestyle and uses traditional methods such as pulse diagnosis (Nadi Pariksha) to understand your constitution, then decides whether Vamanam is right for you and which preparation to use. Panchakarma at Sattva is medically supervised.
Classical Vamanam has three stages, all supervised by the physician:
- Preparation: internal oleation with medicated ghee over a few days, then Abhyangam and steam. The evening before, a diet that increases Kapha is usually given.
- The procedure: in the morning, after a drink such as milk or a herbal decoction, an emetic herbal preparation is given and you are closely monitored by the team.
- Aftercare: rest, then a gradual return to normal food, starting with light meals.
Who may benefit from Vamanam?
Vamanam is advised only after a full assessment. It may be considered for:
- People with Kapha-predominant conditions, as judged by the physician
- People with long-standing allergies or breathing complaints, alongside their regular medical care
Whether Vamanam is suitable for you is decided by the physician after your consultation. Please tell us about pregnancy, recent surgery or injury, fever, skin problems, allergies, heart conditions and any medicines you take.
It is not suitable for everyone, for example children, older or frail people, pregnant women, or people with certain heart conditions. Keep using any inhalers you have been prescribed.
What to expect
Your visit starts with a consultation, after which the therapy is carried out in the therapy room. Afterwards you can rest before going home, and the therapist will give you simple aftercare advice. The length of each session and the number of sittings vary from person to person; your physician will explain them in your treatment plan.
Vamanam: frequently asked questions
Do I need a consultation before Vamanam?
Yes. An appointment is required for all consultations and treatments. Your first consultation covers your health history, diet and lifestyle, and includes traditional pulse diagnosis (Nadi Pariksha), so that the physician can decide whether Vamanam is suitable for you.
Is Vamanam unpleasant?
It is an intensive procedure, and the team explains every step beforehand and stays with you throughout.
Can Vamanam cure asthma?
We cannot promise that. It may be part of an Ayurvedic plan, but please keep following your doctor’s advice and keep your inhalers.
