Medicated Powder Bundle Massage

Churna Swedanam in Bhopal

A therapeutic massage using warm bundles of medicated powder to effectively relieve aches and inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory disorders.

What is Churna Swedanam?

Churna Swedanam, also called Churna Pinda Sweda or, in Kerala, Podikizhi, is a sudation (swedana) therapy. Herbal powders (churna) are tied into cloth bundles, heated, and used to massage and warm the body.

It is a ‘dry’ form of sweda, classically used when Kapha and Ama accompany pain and swelling.

How Churna Swedanam is done at Sattva

Every therapy at Sattva begins with a consultation. Our physician reviews your health history, diet and lifestyle and uses traditional methods such as pulse diagnosis (Nadi Pariksha) to understand your constitution, then decides whether Churna Swedanam is right for you and which preparation to use. Panchakarma at Sattva is medically supervised.

The herbal powder bundles are heated in a pan, sometimes with a little medicated oil, and pressed and massaged rhythmically over the affected area or the whole body. They are reheated throughout so that the warmth stays even. The therapist always checks the temperature first.

Who may benefit from Churna Swedanam?

Our clinic describes Churna Swedanam as effectively relieving aches and inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory disorders. After assessment, it may be considered for people with:

  • Aches, stiffness and swelling in the joints or muscles
  • Inflammatory joint conditions, alongside their regular medical care

Whether Churna Swedanam is suitable for you is decided by the physician after your consultation. Please tell us about pregnancy, recent surgery or injury, fever, skin problems, allergies, heart conditions and any medicines you take.

What to expect

Your visit starts with a consultation, after which the therapy is carried out in the therapy room. Afterwards you can rest before going home, and the therapist will give you simple aftercare advice. The length of each session and the number of sittings vary from person to person; your physician will explain them in your treatment plan.

Churna Swedanam: frequently asked questions

Do I need a consultation before Churna Swedanam?

Yes. An appointment is required for all consultations and treatments. Your first consultation covers your health history, diet and lifestyle, and includes traditional pulse diagnosis (Nadi Pariksha), so that the physician can decide whether Churna Swedanam is suitable for you.

How is Churna Swedanam different from Patrapottali Swedanam?

Churna Swedanam uses bundles of dry herbal powders, while Patrapottali uses fresh medicinal leaves fried in oil. The physician chooses based on your condition.

Is it hot?

It is warm. The therapist tests the bundle on their own skin before using it, and you should say if it feels too hot.
