What is Udwartanam?
Udwartanam (also spelled Udvartana) is a dry massage in which fine medicated herbal powders are rubbed into the skin with firm strokes, traditionally in an upward direction, against the direction of hair growth. Unlike most Ayurvedic massages, it uses little or no oil.
In Ayurveda it is considered Kapha-reducing and is classically described for heaviness, sluggishness and excess body fat.
How Udwartanam is done at Sattva
Every therapy at Sattva begins with a consultation. Our physician reviews your health history, diet and lifestyle and uses traditional methods such as pulse diagnosis (Nadi Pariksha) to understand your constitution, then decides whether Udwartanam is right for you and which preparation to use. Panchakarma at Sattva is medically supervised.
After the consultation, the therapist applies the herbal powder and massages it vigorously over the body with brisk, upward strokes. A steam bath often follows.
Who may benefit from Udwartanam?
Our clinic describes Udwartanam as an invigorating deep-tissue massage to improve metabolism, reduce cellulite and enhance skin tone. After assessment, it may be considered for people who:
- Are working on weight management alongside diet and exercise
- Feel heavy or sluggish
- Want a toning, stimulating massage rather than an oil massage
Whether Udwartanam is suitable for you is decided by the physician after your consultation. Please tell us about pregnancy, recent surgery or injury, fever, skin problems, allergies, heart conditions and any medicines you take.
It is not usually done on broken, inflamed or very sensitive skin. Tell the therapist about any skin condition.
What to expect
Your visit starts with a consultation, after which the therapy is carried out in the therapy room. Afterwards you can rest before going home, and the therapist will give you simple aftercare advice. The length of each session and the number of sittings vary from person to person; your physician will explain them in your treatment plan.
Udwartanam: frequently asked questions
Do I need a consultation before Udwartanam?
Yes. An appointment is required for all consultations and treatments. Your first consultation covers your health history, diet and lifestyle, and includes traditional pulse diagnosis (Nadi Pariksha), so that the physician can decide whether Udwartanam is suitable for you.
Is Udwartanam a weight-loss treatment?
Not on its own. In Ayurveda it is used alongside diet, activity and other measures advised by the physician, and results vary from person to person.
Does Udwartanam hurt?
The pressure is firm and the powder can feel slightly rough. Tell the therapist if you want lighter pressure.
